Project Overview

Design a new Press Release email template using email best practices that could adapt to various content.

This opportunity allotted for a complete design overhaul and logo refresh.

Target Audience

The content of the email is provided and then is released to investors, Business Wire subscribers, and employees. The design had to match the tone of the content while being readable on various devices for viewers of all age groups.

The design reflected the current audience as I wanted to make usability and readability the main focus. Each Press Release does not contain the same content therefore the layout needed to be similar enough for subscribers to easily find the content they were used to each release, yet adapt to the ever-changing copy and imagery.

Design Requirements

There were few design requirements, besides keeping with brand guidelines, readability, and possible delivery internally through Outlook. The final design options were then presented to the CEO for review and feedback.

Project Reflection

Core project goals were achieved. There were more teaching moments in this project compared to previous projects as I needed to provide published resources to solidify design and HTML choices.

Achieved

  • Create email Press Release template for use in new Email Marketing Platform. Achieved and updated template in current Email Marketing Platform while awaiting transition.
  • Use best practices in designing and coding. Increase line-height, font size, and imagery/copy layout. Plus, included intro text for email clients.
  • Design within brand guidelines. Press Release template now looks cohesive with the updated brand guide.
  • Update Logo. Refreshed the text logo by removing dated elements and streamlining the new logo with current trends.
  • Responsive. Email viewports were sized and displayed correctly for email apps on mobile, tablets, and desktops.

Missed

  • Create email Press Release template for use in new Email Marketing Platform. With the content of the email varying each release, I could not rely on imagery or illustrations to break up the long emails.
  • Design within brand guidelines. No official iconography or email colors were approved therefore I had to rely on the same brand colors and percentage-of-use outlined in the guide.
